Microsoft is planning a Windows 7 Tech Guarantee Program which will make it possible for Windows Vista owners to upgrade their operating system to Windows 7. They have not released many information yet about the program but some have been published at Neowin today.
Not all editions of Windows Vista will be eligible for the upgrade. Only Windows Vista Home Premium, Windows Vista Business or Windows Vista Ultimate owners will have the chance and only if they have bought it in one of the following languages: Brazilian Portuguese, Czech, Danish, Dutch, English, Finnish, French, German, Hungarian, Italian, Japanese, Korean, Norwegian (Bokmål), Polish, Portuguese, Russian, Simplified Chinese, Spanish, Traditional Chinese (Hong Kong), Turkish.
Some languages (like Swedish) might be missing and could be included at a later point. It is also very likely that the upgrade will only be eligible for a comparable edition of Windows 7. Windows Vista Home Premium users for example should not have high hopes to be able to upgrade to Windows 7 Ultimate without costs. Microsoft is said to release additional information later this month.

GOD I HOPE SO! If they allow you to upgrade to 7 from Vista for free, I think MS might just save their asses in the OS market.
I hope it is free also. Funny, I’ve been searching to see if anyone had started a class-action lawsuit, or if there was a refund program of some sort.
I have a copy of Vista Ultimate still shrinkwrapped, never opened, and a copy of Home Premium, used once and deleted, but the retailer wouldn’t take back either of them.
It will not be Free, what it will be is a Free upgrade to 7 if you get a windows Vista PC # weeks/months befor 7 is out.
Because 7 is like vista but better hardwaresoftware compatability is not a problem.
Paul.. its no MS fault the Retailer wont take it back… its the retailers, and if it hasent been opend they have to…
With the rise in MAC usage for home, mainly due to the poor performing windows OS surely common sense will see some sort of rollout available with a reduction. Knowing MS though I feel riding roughshod over everyday users!!!
God! Why on earth not Windows Vista Basic? :O
I bought like you bought Premium or Ultimate or whatever, and now i can not uppgrade? …
I purchased a brand new pc from staples with vista on it. They promised me that I would be upgraded to windows 7 as soon as it came out. The tech at the store said to go on the staples website and type in “windows 7 easy tech guarantee”. Somebody please help me find a link or a phone number I could call. Get me out of the Vista!
