Microsoft will be moving the IPTV forum to include Windows 7 PC’s with Media Room. MediaRoom is a software platform for TV and video service providers. It will  provide the delivery of video entertainment across TV’s, PC’s, and mobile devices, anywhere inside and outside the home. It is part of the IPTV forum.

Media Room

IPTV, is a system through which digital television service is delivered using the TCP/IP  suite.  thus it provides video and audio delivery  over a packet-switched network infrastructure like the Internet instead of being delivered through traditional radio frequency broadcasts, or satellite TV signal, or cable television formats. Typically you will find that it is designed to provide live television programming, time-shifted programming,  or video content on demand.

IPTV is delivered at the consumer / home level using a standardization process to the end-user premises using equipment stationed there for that purpose. The subscriber based telecommunications provide the high-speed access channels to the end-user.

The latest version of Media Room 2.0 will include support for Windows7 Media Center. So TV operators like HD TV and DVR can deliver their premium TV programs. No additional TV or computer hardware will be required. The 2.0 platform will provide the capability to start watching a show on one screen and finish it on another, say a family room  PC to a bedroom PC.

Another feature of Mediaroom 2.0 is that it also adds the ability to integrate third-party content from Internet TV partners and other Internet-based content sources. This puts all of the content on one interface and lets subscribers search all the content in one location. It also provides support for content playback using Microsoft’s PlayReady content access and protection technology.

Testing by content providers using Mediaroom 2.0 will begin in February 2010. Operators will look at the next generation Microsoft IPTV platform that brings  capabilities and features including cloud digital video recording (DVR), on-demand features, and interactive applications.
