Windows 7 migration is just one of the technologies that a network administrator can be involved in. Assessing the network and the hosts can be a time consuming and difficult job. Microsoft has provided an assessment and Planning Toolkit that locates and identifies the hosts on a network and provides a detailed inventory. The technology underlying this is the Windows Management Instrumentation and Remote Registry Service. The planning toolkit provides a powerful inventory, assessment, and reporting tool to simplify the migration planning process.
Windows Management Instrumentation (WMI) and Remote Registry Service
WMI can be used in all Windows-based applications; it is the infrastructure for management data and operations on Windows-based operating systems. With WMI you can automate administrative tasks on remote computers but WMI also supplies management data to other parts of the operating system and products. The remote registry service is a tool for a network administrator to allow them to remotely audit the company’s client machines.
The MAP Toolkit includes the following components:
- Microsoft_Assessment_and_Planning_Toolkit_Setup.exe. Installation package containing the tool, release notes, Getting Started Guide, and toolkit help (chm file).
- Release_Notes_en.htm. Available as a separate download. Provides information to read before installing the MAP Toolkit, including installation prerequisites and known issues.
- Getting_Started_Guide.en.doc. Available as a separate download. Provides information about toolkit installation, environment preparation, and assessment scenarios supported by toolkit wizards and the UI.
- MAP Sample Documents.zip. Available as a separate download. Contains sample reports and proposals that the MAP tool generates in Word and Excel formats.
The installation process looks like this:
There will be an installation of Sql Server Express for database purposes.
And the Application after installation looks like this:
The Toolkit Operations have three main portions, client, Server, and virtualization.
You can run the application using the Inventory and Assessment Wizard. The application uses Active Directory and the Domain Network Structure.

Thanks for sharing the video! It’s a few months old, but still quite informative–especially for IT pros who have yet to start their Windows 7 deployments. MAP FTW!
