Windows 7 Market Share Breaks 10%

Windows 7 is still being adopted by consumers and businesses a like at a rapid rate. The latest market share statistics are in for the month of January and we see that Windows 7 has surpassed the 10% mark, just over 3 months after its release on the 22nd of October 2009.

According to Net Applications, Windows 7 is now being used on every one in ten computers, which is quite an impressive feat, especially when you consider that Windows 7 has only been out for just over 3 months. Unsurprisingly, Net Applications has indicated that the highest Windows 7 usage in the U.S. is centered on Redmond, Wash., where Microsoft has its headquarters; some 42 percent of Internet users within the city of Redmond itself are currently using Windows 7.

What’s even more impressive is the fact that Windows 7 managed to reach the 4% milestone in just one month, while its predecessor,Windows Vista took a grueling 7 months to accomplish this same feat.

Still, Windows XP continues to be the market leader with a 66.31 percent market share in January, miles ahead of Windows Vista (17.39 percent). Windows 7 had an average of 7.51 percent of the market for January, peaking on the 31st with 10 percent.

This information would correspond well with the news last week that Windows 7 had become Microsoft’s fastest selling operating system ever.

It also seems that like a faithful dog, Windows XP is still hanging in their but is continuing to decline. Since the release of Windows 7, Microsoft XP has dropped from 72% of the market down to 66.31%

However I don’t think Windows 7 will be a true success until it has overtaken Windows XP in market share. I would expect it to surpass Windows Vista ( 17.39 percent ) soon enough but Windows XP will be the biggest challenge for Windows 7.

Won’t be long before Windows 7 overtakes XP. It’s just too good not to achieve that feat! I’ve had Windows 7 since October 11th, and have been completely satisfied and actually dread working on XP systems now!
