It’s so easy to lose a file!

Searching by Specific Dates

You can search on specific dates and date ranges. AQS allows relative date values (like today, tomorrow, or next week) and day (like Tuesday or Monday) and month (February) values.

Restricting File Type by Date/Week/Month/Year

This table shows you how to search by Date and other related parameters.

Find Finds Items Syntax
Date today’s date. date:today
tomorrow’s date date:tomorrow
yesterday’s date. date:yesterday
Week date within the current week. date:this week
date within the previous week. date:last week
Month date falling this month date:this month
date last month date:last month
nominated month date:February
Year date falling in the previous year date:last year

If you prefer to use the Boolean filters to perform these searches the next section should interest you.

Searching using Boolean filters

Using Boolean filters is another way to perform a more precise search. Boolean filters let you combine search words using simple logic, as you can see in the following table.

Filter Example Use this to
AND Windows 7 AND Vista Find files that contain both words “Windows” and “Vista”. The words don’t have to be adjoining each other.
NOT Windows 7 NOT Vista Find files that contain the word “Windows” but not “Vista.”
OR Windows t OR Vista Find files that contain either of the words “Windows” or “Vista.”
Quotes “Windows Vista” Find files that contain the exact phrase “Windows Vista.”
Parentheses (Windows Vista) Find files that contain both words “Windows” and “Vista,” in any order.
> date: >28/12/09 Find files that are more than or later than a certain value, such as after 28/12/09.
< size: < 3 MB Find files that are less than or earlier than a certain value, such as less than 3 MB. You can also specify other sizes, such as KB and GB.

Tip!  When you type Boolean filters like AND, Not and OR, you must use capital letters. You can also combine Boolean filters with file properties. Here are a couple of examples:

  • Music: Opera AND Puccini
  • Artist: Ella Fitzgerald OR Louis Armstrong

So there you have it, my last word on Windows 7′s Search! Good Searching!
