Coming April 27 – Windows7 Component Embedded System

Windows 7, six months out, and a success is now feeling the ultimate compliment … you know imitation is the greatest form of flattery. In this case even if the flattery/imitation comes from Microsoft itself. But those guys are content. Their operating system is doing thing that make it worth having. So on April 27, at the Embedded Systems Conference (ESC) in Silicon Valley, Microsoft will release the component embedded version of Windows7 called Windows Embedded Standard 7.

Microsoft has gone the route of using the success of Windows 7 to change the name of the embedded system from Quebec to Windows 7 Embedded Standard. This is similar to the change in their mobile phone to Windows 7 phone.  They want their success to blanket as many products as possible.

Embedded Systems

Computer systems sometimes are called an embedded system when their performance role is restricted. Typically it is a computer system that is designed to perform one or only a few dedicated operations. They frequently have real-time computing constraints. A modem would be an example of an embedded system.

Back on February 15th, 2010, Microsoft began sending out invitations to testers to work with Windows Embedded Standard 7 Release Candidate (RC). It is now available for download from Microsoft Connect.

The invitations emailed to testers for Windows Embedded Standard 7 were designed to leverage Windows7. That is because this particular version of Windows 7 is for OEMs that produce small devices. They will leverage the operating system in the context of limited hardware capabilities. In other words,  Microsoft wants the Windows7 platform to be everywhere, including in small devices. But just where the embedded platform will appear and in what devices may be seen at the convention on the 27th.
