Microsoft’s Bing Is Gaining Share: I Binged It!

Can Bing, Microsoft’s Search Engine, surpass Google? Let’s be honest. Probably not. But in the land of the mobile territory, the battles may not be over yet. Bing may have a chance. At least that’s what they are hoping for.

Try this. Bing may not have to be the top search engine. Why? Because Yahoo made a deal in 2009  with Microsoft that will allow Bing to be the search engine technology that Yahoo will appropriate on its Web sites; the catch is that it won’t use the Bing name. But If Yahoo and Microsoft hold their current search engine shares, Bing will run almost 30 percent of all searches.

Bing And Google - Market Share

How can Bing be successful? For one, Bing has to see a bump-up in searches; this will have to translate into more business from advertisers. This may be possible because for years now, many companies that wanted their ads to appear alongside the search results and have sought an alternative to Google to get better prices. If that is the case, new pricing structures from advertising may benefit the Microsoft – Yahoo alliance.

Not for lack of trying has Microsoft been looking for a way into the search engine market. They have been trying to build a presence in search since 2004. Hmm… its last pre-Bing effort was called Live Search; but that did not work out so well. And despite extensive investments in time and money and technology, Microsoft’s share of all Internet related searches fell eight points between 2004 and 2009.  Most of the nearly $6 billion in losses that were racked up by Microsoft’s online business division since 2006 have been related to search. So they are looking for any foothold that will offer them an opportunity to succeed.

This may be coming as there is an expression that is now growing: “I Binged it.”

I use “Google It.” I’ll have to see if I can Bing it.
