Office 15 and New Applications

Microsoft is still saying very little publicly about Office 15. Last June 2010, dome information leaked about Office 15, the application suite that is supposed to replace Office 2010. One thing in the works is a new application that is supposed to be added to the suite. According to Microsoft, Office 15 is the next natural step in their suite of application investments.

Among the specific investments that Microsoft plans to continue to hone in on are the creation experiences, which come with the likes video and image editing. There is also the integration of social interactions on the consumer and business fronts. For educational users there are more features and functions. For Windows Live Messenger there are unified communications, including better interoperability. and new uses and experiences for SkyDrive.

There is a to-do list of some things which may or may not make it into Office 15. Microsoft is planning, at some point to add new and additional standalone apps to the Office suite.

So what could be in the mix, what new app may make it into the suite? It is rumored that business intelligence/charting type app was on the short list, as well as some kind of “meeting” app. Microsoft has done work on every phase of meetings, from Outlook invitations, to notetaking (with OneNote), to broadcasting (with some of the new features in PowerPoint 2010). Some type of app that implements a “meeting” technology might certainly seem in line.

Another one might be some sort of document management system like a stripped down version of Sharepoint. Given the interest in Sharepoint, some kind of application like that could spur more interest in the full blown Sharepoint application.

And finally, given the attention that is starting to develop on the “Cloud,” some application that makes Cloud operations user and business friendly and accessible would be welcome.
