Microsoft May Build Its Own Windows 8 Tablet?

Rumours have recently hit the web that Microsoft could be gearing up to enter the tablet market,  but this time with an actual tablet, not just an OS. According to a report by Digitimes, Microsoft is considering launching its own brand of tablet PC. The tablet will obviously feature Windows 8 and should launch by the end of 2012.

Microsoft are said to be working with Texas Instruments and Taiwan based manufacturers according to rumours coming from the supply chain. Of course Microsoft haven’t confirmed this rumour.

I’m not completely certain about this prospect however. I know it does work very well for Apple, if you want their OS, you have to have their hardware and vice versa. It works for them, but what makes Microsoft different is the fact that they do offer you choice. You can choose from a plethora of different laptops, netbooks and PC’s when you want to have Windows 7. Microsoft are following the same tactic with Windows Phone 7 as well.

If you look at Microsoft’s past history with selling their own hardware though, it hasn’t been too successful. They’ve barely made a dent on the iPod with their Zune player. And remember Kin, yeah that lasted long didn’t it?

However on the flip side of things, they have been successful selling their own line of mice and keyboard and the Xbox game console has worked out in their favour too. I’m just wondering if a tablet might be a step too far?

This would also mean that Microsoft are going to be competing directly with all other tablet makers who are currently or will be carrying their OS and Windows 8.

I know there’s an  old adage, “if you want something done right, do it yourself” and maybe this is what Microsoft are aiming at? They aren’t happy with the quality of tablets being produced by other manufactures so they’re going to do it themselves.

What do you think of this idea? Does it make sense for Microsoft? How do you think other manufactures will react to it?

In the early days of sound, Microsoft didn’t like the hardware available so came out with their own MS Sound Syatem. It prompted others to make better sound systems, primarily Creative, and when they did the MS one faded out.

i think this might be good. finally someone that can compete with apple and start a price war thatll make the hardware more affordable.

Interesting. Because Microsoft, like Apple, is one of the major computer esque product manufactures, and because their tablets will actually be flash ready (-cough- unlike any product from Apple), they just might have a shot at making this tablet work.

Do we still see xbox 360 by the end of 2012? omg no new xbox until end of next year ? ps 4 comes out , ipad 4 comes out Android 4 comes out (one and a half year is long enough for google to release 1 major iteration) and what we have? window 8 with feature exist today. hmm do not you think window 8 is quite obsolete by end of 2012?

Windows 8 will not be obsolete when it comes out, due to the nature of the features and possibilities that it will be offering.

PS4 isn’t projected until 2013, and Xbox 720 (unconfirmed name) is projected around the same time, maybe a bit earlier.

Ipad 4, knowing Apple, will just have features that the first one should’ve had, and most likely a more powerful processor but nothing innovative. Android 4.0… Well, I’m not sure.

Also, please use better grammar, it was hard for me to understand what you were TRYING to say.

      HA! -chuckles-
Windows 8 is still in development.
You shouldn’t have any Windows 8 build in the first place, so you aren’t going to get any support.
      Enjoy using a legit OS

You can’t go to Microsoft about a problem that your having with their OS that hasn’t even came out yet. That’s stupid, and because you have Windows 8, you’re technically a criminal. It says right on the OS it’s Criminal Liability. Don’t use an OS that’s before beta, and problem solved.

And while they’re at it, make a line of, say, five laptops similar to the Samsung Series 9 and put a nice Windows logo on the lid, one that lights up and pulses, like the startup logo, would be cool.

I think there’s a good chance that while they may not have a
MSFT-produced device, they will work with Nokia to build a Microsoft
branded tablet. Nokia certainly has the experience at working with low
power devices and the recent investments MSFT has made with the company
sure would make alot of sense then. Especially if they then released a
similarly branded cell phone from Nokia as well.

Making a tablet with a capacitive touch screen would be a good idea.  Call it Pie.  It would chop up the apples.

All the Microsoft hardware I’ve ever purchased have been top-notch quality wise, from the speakers I bought in ’99 to the myriad of mice over the years including the first optical mouse on the market.

I’ve wanted a slate-style computer since ’05, so I’ve been debating about getting an Android tablet – but now I’m debating about waiting to see what MS has to offer by way of a slate PC next year…

Genuine Genius.  Get that software to work business, AND move like Surface/WebOs; and I’m ALL IN.
