New Windows 8 Personalization Images Emerge

New images have appeared of the Start Screen personalization options in the Windows 8 beta.  In the images, posted online by you can see shots from what they say is build 8175.  They show that Microsoft are sticking to their guns on a background to the Start Screen that’s far less customisable than what we’ve been used to for years (though give it some time and Stardock will come up with something as they always do).

There’s no custom desktop image for example though there are eight background patterns to choose from.  Then there’s a choice of nine colours.  This isn’t what most people would call “customisation” but its a start and we could still see more appear by the time Windows 8 ships (making people writing books like me redo lots of screenshots!)

I’ll let you judge from the images below what you think and it would be very interesting to see your comments.  It could be argued for instance that if you want to work primarily with the Windows 8 ‘traditional’ desktop that the blue, black and grey shades might be less Metro-like than the green we’ve seen in the Developer Preview, and will make the new Metro pop-ups less intrusive.  It remains to be seen however what Microsoft will release next month.

It’s really all I’d hoped for. To me, the background isn’t that big of a deal, but if consumers shout loud enough, I’m sure Microsoft will add more options.

Why can’t they allow a picture on the background for the wallpaper and not just the lock screen?  The lock screen is seen the least amount of time.  I know it’s not a huge deal, but the Xbox 360 allows it (albeit they make you pay for some).  Is it a design decision, a battery issue or what?

This bothers me a little with my Windows Phone too.  One thing I like about Android phones/tablets is the ability to have a panoramic picture for their phones.  Windows Phone uses panoramic a lot for their apps, so not sure why fuller bg customization isn’t included on these.  At least, it isn’t just black or white like WP7.

Moving tiles around the screen doesn’t personalize the phone or Windows 8 tablet or whatever that much.  Maybe I’m more right brained creative and Microsoft is more left brained analytical, but when Android tablets look alive with moving backgrounds, some customers choose a device based on first impression visuals.

The experience is most important, of course, but without customization … everything is gonna feel too much the same on the phone/tablet/PC/TV.  There’s a reason why we wear different outfits, eat different food, listen to different music. Well, it’s still early, so things could change…

I like the white or black backgrounds on Windows Phone and you can understand why they do it there on the smaller screens. I guess the idea is not to distract you from the live tiles information but it should be our choice not there’s. They should keep the above background pattern feature I do like it but also allow images even if it’s not the default setting.

the look is a big reason I won’t consider windows phone.  if it had some customizability I’d actually consider it.  I hope they don’t do the same with w8.
