Aside from the announcement of Bing Vision for the UK, Microsoft also announced a new feature Coming to Bing on Windows Phone.
Microsoft’s current implementation of Bing into Windows Phone provides search, bing vision, bing voice, bing music and bing scout. One feature that is missing is image matching. This feature would allow a user to snap a picture of an article in a magazine or newspaper and then be directed to the actual online version. Here’s the announcement via the Bing UK blog:
Today, we are happy to announce two innovative free updates for Windows Phone.
Bing Vision – available today (17 February 2012)
As well as allowing users to detect product information from QR codes and Microsoft Tags, Bing Vision now scans barcodes, CD, DVD and book covers. Plus Bing Vision can now provide local availability and cost comparison information on goods so people can quickly purchase items of interest while on the go.
Bing Image Matching for Newspapers (rolling out in March on Bing Vision)
Enabling people to quickly find the digital version of a print magazine or newspaper article, Bing Image Matching for Newspapers allows users to take a photo of an article using their Windows Phone camera and link directly to a digital version of the article online.
Offering global access, consumers will have access to content from over 3,000 publications worldwide.
Currently, Bing Vision can search , Tags, QR codes, barcodes, video games, DVD’s, music CD’s and translate text. The image matching feature will apparently be available for over 3,000 publications at launch, so you can snap a picture of an article you’re reading while at home or in the dentist’s office and then pick up the rest while on the go via your Windows Phone.
