What is fractal art? It is a geometric art. It is a genre of computer art and digital art which are part of new type of media art. The Julia set and Mandlebrot sets are considered the principal icons of fractal art.  A fractal is a rough or fragmented geometric shape that can be subdivided in parts, each of which is (at least approximately) a reduced-size copy of the whole. Fractals are generally self-similar and independent of scale.

Fractal art uses mathematical algorithms which in turn create fractal objects through calculations. Representing the calculation results as images, animations, or media. The art is only about 30 years old developed from the mid 1980s.

Fractal art is not drawn or painted by hand. It is a computer generated image. It is created with the assistance of fractal-generating software. There are three phases. One is by setting parameters of appropriate fractal software; then executing the  calculation; and finally evaluating the product. In some cases, other graphics programs are used to further modify the images produced in a post-processing operation. One important factor is that non-fractal imagery can be integrated into the artwork making it even more appealing.

2-Dimensional Art

As art goes, fractal Art is a subclass of two-dimensional visual art, and is in many respects similar to photography. Two-dimensional art consists of paintings, drawings, prints, and photographs. The execution of each form differs from each other primarily, so that separates one from the other . In that regard fractal images usually appear as prints. But the native environment of fractals is in a electronic image format. Digital Fractal art is created with computers and computer software. It is an extension of the traditional 2-D format. This is a format that traditional visual artists are embracing, which adds them into Fractal Art’s digital realm.

Beautiful Landscape Wallpapers from Annmbonehttp://www.everything-microsoft.com/2012/05/05/beautiful-landscape-wallpapers-annmbone/ http://www.everything-microsoft.com/2012/05/05/beautiful-landscape-wallpapers-annmbone/#comments Sat, 05 May 2012 14:03:49 +0000 http://www.everything-microsoft.com/?p=93946 These images that you can add to your collection of landscape wallpapers are a true thing of beauty.

Ann Marie Bone is a freelance artist with a passion for vibrant colors as these images show. A graduate from Nottingham University in 1983,  she lives in Dovedale, in the Peak District of Derbyshire, where she claims  is a constant inspiration for her many nature paintings.

Blue Moon

But that is not the only kind of art she paints. She does other subjects from pets to portraits and all sorts of landscapes. She also can take a favorite photograph that you would like her to turn into a painting; she can do that.

Her specialty is in unique images, and she will listen to someone’s ideas for a painting and what type of color color scheme to use. She’s open to that. And if you like one of her paintings but would like to change certain items, she can customize the image for you.

These ten images are part of a larger collection.

Here is Blue Lagoon, BlueBell Woods, Endless Days, End of the Rainbow, Fervent Forest, Fishing Trip, Force of Nature, Secret Sunset, Sunset tree, and Twisted Blossom.

Her focus is mainly on oils and acrylic on canvas, but working with a wide variety of sizes. However, she can also paint in water colors and do pencil drawings which are framed to order.

Budget limitations can be worked around when she can provide information on the options available in your price range.

She is also a member of the worldwide arts website Deviant Art which has over 14 million members. Her landscapes are usually among the most popular for the month under the Landscape category of Traditional Painting and the site gives her motivation to paint. People can visit her Deviant Art profile at annmbone.deviantart.com.

Close All Programs in Windows With One Simple Clickhttp://www.everything-microsoft.com/2012/03/29/close-programs-windows-simple-click/ http://www.everything-microsoft.com/2012/03/29/close-programs-windows-simple-click/#comments Thu, 29 Mar 2012 15:14:11 +0000 http://www.everything-microsoft.com/?p=93169 These days, because our computers have become more and more powerful, we’ve started to multi task a lot more. We regularly will have several programs open at once. It’s not uncommon to have an Excel Spreadsheet, 2 Word documents, a PDF, Your Music Playing as well as a few browser tabs going all at once.

However when you’ve eventually finished all your work, it can become a bit tedious to manually close each program. Wouldn’t it be so much handier if you could just close everything with a single click?

Well there’s a great little app called Close All which will do just that for you.

The program itself is tiny and doesn’t take up any of your memory as it doesn’t need to run in the background. It simply sends a close command to all the open windows and doesn’t even require any installation.

Simply download the ZIP file from the link below.

[Download not found]

Now extract the ZIP file to a location on your hard drive.

Once you’ve done this, just go ahead and pin this CloseAll.exe file to the task bar by following the steps in the screenshot below.

You’ll know find an icon in your task bar, all you have to do now is click that and it will close all your programs for you. Don’t worry, if you’ve forgotten to save any work, you’ll still be prompted to save it before the program closes.

Now all you have to do is click on the icon and all your open programs will close

Microsoft Device Center 1.0 Beta Released, Replaces IntelliPointhttp://www.everything-microsoft.com/2012/03/28/microsoft-device-center-10-beta-released-replaces-intellipoint/ http://www.everything-microsoft.com/2012/03/28/microsoft-device-center-10-beta-released-replaces-intellipoint/#comments Wed, 28 Mar 2012 14:43:00 +0000 http://www.everything-microsoft.com/?p=93118 Microsoft has released a first beta version of Microsoft Device Center 1.0, which is replacing the company’s IntelliPoint and IntelliPoint Pro applications. Both applications add system drivers and control software for Microsoft hardware, and here especially keyboards and mice.

The new Microsoft Device Center is available as a beta download at the official Microsoft Download Center. It can be downloaded there both as a 32-bit and 64-bit version.

The Device Center was designed from ground-up, offering customization options for Microsoft hardware connected to the PC. The following screenshot shows a keyboard customization screen.

microsoft device center

Customize your Microsoft mice and keyboards with Microsoft Device Center beta software. This software combines the functionality of IntelliPoint and IntelliType Pro software.

  • View and change basic and application-specific settings for all connected devices in one place.
  • Explore features with pop-up descriptive and “how-to” InfoTips.
  • Includes access to an online How-To/Troubleshooting library.
  • Includes access to an online Healthy Computing Guide for tips on how to work more comfortably on your computer.

Microsoft recommends to remove any mouse programs from the computer before the new version of the software is installed. This includes previous versions of Intellipoint or IntelliPoint Pro, as well as other third party drivers or applications.

Microsoft’s Device Center is only compatibloe with the Windows 7 and Windows 8 operating system, and not with Vista or XP. Users should keep in mind that the program is released as a beta version, and as such should not be installed in a productive environment.

It is likely that we will see a final release at the time the Windows 8 operating system will come out as a final version.

Download Artwork Wallpapers from the Artist eReSawhttp://www.everything-microsoft.com/2012/03/11/artwork-wallpapers-artist-eresaw/ http://www.everything-microsoft.com/2012/03/11/artwork-wallpapers-artist-eresaw/#comments Mon, 12 Mar 2012 03:04:48 +0000 http://www.windows7news.com/?p=23195 Here is a gallery of some amazing artwork from the artist eReSaw.

The images come from her collection of art that have exotic colors, and images.

This collection demonstrates the imagination that looks at objects and finds new ways to present them.

Virtual art represents pushing the boundaries of what is accepted as the norm or the status quo, primarily in the cultural realm. The notion of the existence of the avant-garde is considered by some to be a hallmark of modernism, as distinct from post modernism. The artist -eReSaw’s imges are a form of Avant-Gard with a virtual art display. She takes ordinary images and finds ways to modify them and combine them with other images.  With the advancements in technology virtual art has transformed and evolved quickly from simple 8-bit representations to 3D models containing millions of polygons. Virtual art is made of many computer programs and has no boundaries, so it uses animations, movies, computer games and so on. As it becomes more and more popular and important, it results in people being able to live another virtual life.

Virtual art consist of virtual reality, augmented reality, or mixed reality, it can be seen in other aspects such as video games and movies. As virtual art covers wide array of mediums it is a catch-all term for specific focuses within it. Unlike most art forms, with virtual art one can become a recognizable figure in the community with little to no experience. For example, a screen shot taken out of a video game with the help of the internet can go viral and quickly become a phenomenon.

The gallary presented here is only a small part of the images from the artist eReSaw. Enjoy the images.

First Windows 8 Theme Releasedhttp://www.everything-microsoft.com/2012/03/01/windows-8-theme-released/ http://www.everything-microsoft.com/2012/03/01/windows-8-theme-released/#comments Thu, 01 Mar 2012 14:28:45 +0000 http://www.windows8news.com/?p=2623 Microsoft has fundamentally changed the company’s desktop operating system personalization strategy with the release of Windows 7. Vista and XP users together received less than a dozen official themes ever since they were released to the public. The theme engine changes in Windows 7 made it a lot easier to create and distribute themes. Windows 7′s Personalization Gallery is filled with hundreds of official themes, and while they do not alter core elements of the operating system, they offer enough personalization to please the majority of users. And those who need full conversions can still download third party themes to install them on top of the operating system. It appears that Microsoft is planning to continue the personalization strategy in Windows 8. The Redmond company today has released the first official Windows 8 theme. The Nightfall and Starlight panoramic themeis a dual monitor theme exclusively designed for the Windows 8 operating system.

Designed to extend seamlessly across dual monitors with identical resolution settings, this dramatic free theme for your Windows 8 Consumer Preview desktop also shifts your glass color to match each stunning, wide-angle image. Explore distant galaxies, verdant meadows, steep mountains, and serene seas without ever leaving your chair.

Microsoft notes that the theme can only be used in the Windows 8 Consumer Preview or Windows 8 Developer Preview. The theme supports single monitor setups, but only the center part of the image will be visible on those systems in this case. The wallpaper will automatically stretch across both displays on a dual monitor setup. All desktop wallpapers have a resolution of 3840×1200, which is perfect for large dual monitor systems. You find all wallpapers below.

[Download not found]

It is likely that we will see additional theme releases in the near future, especially for single monitor systems but also for mobile devices.

Hotmail – Best Spam Protection E-mail Programhttp://www.everything-microsoft.com/2012/02/14/hotmail-spam-protection-email-program/ http://www.everything-microsoft.com/2012/02/14/hotmail-spam-protection-email-program/#comments Tue, 14 Feb 2012 20:56:26 +0000 http://www.everything-microsoft.com/?p=22415 Hotmail is among the best at spam protection. Late last year Microsoft hired Cascade Insights to hold a contest ranking the spam-stopping abilities of the big three Web e-mail providers. The test results put Microsoft’s Hotmail on top but almost tied with Google’s Gmail, while Yahoo Mail was a distant third. This is in contrast to the 2009 findings from Cascade. They ran the same study and at that time ranked Gmail first, followed by Hotmail.

Notes on Avoiding SPAM

While the SPAM-blocking capabilities of Web mail providers are good, they will never be perfect, and SPAMers can be expected to evolve their tactics in an attempt to circumvent SPAM filters. So to avoid spam there are some guidelines to follow on what users can do to minimize the amount of SPAM they receive:

Recognize suspicious sites.

How can you avoid spam? Consider some of the following items because it is usually an invitation for SPAM (or identity theft) to submit your email address and other information to sites that:

  • Request your email address on their home page.
  • Claim to be free but request your credit card information “for verification purposes.”
  • Make any claims that seem too good to be true.
  • Make it hard to leave by popping up “are you sure” types of notifications.
  • Open popup windows as soon as you visit them.
  • You can get something valuable for very little work (“get a free iPad just for filling out a survey”).
  • It claims that you are a randomly selected winner.
  • It claims that there is only a limited time to act on an offer.

Trying to avoid spam is one thing, trying to recognize it is another, so here are some items to consider.

Recognize SPAM.

Spam is often identifiable in your inbox, based on certain characteristics:

  • The content of the message is mostly in images.
  • The sender looks like something randomly generated, such as: 3489203490@cardinalproject.com.
  • The email is similar in content to suspicious Web sites (such as telling you have won, or promises an iPad for filling out a survey).
  • The email asks you to confirm your name, address, or other information.
  • The email claims you need to change your password at a legitimate site, such as PayPal or a banking site.
  • The email contains seemingly random or nonsensical text.

What to do with SPAM.

Here are some specific steps:

1. Delete the email.

2. Use your Web mail provider’s ability to mark it as junk. However, do not mark an email as SPAM if you have intentionally subscribed to it and no longer wish to receive it.

Here are things to avoid…Don’t:

  • Display the images in the email. Spamers will know that have a working email address.
  • Click on links. This also sends a signal to the spammer that they have a good email address.
  • Unsubscribe issues. If it’s legitimate email, you can unsubscribe, but if it’s truly unsolicited, then unsubscribing notifies the spammer they have a real email address.

Chickens, Insects and Butterflies Make Up 3 More Fantastic Windows 7 Themeshttp://www.everything-microsoft.com/2012/02/11/chickens-insects-butterflies-3-fantastic-windows-7-themes/ http://www.everything-microsoft.com/2012/02/11/chickens-insects-butterflies-3-fantastic-windows-7-themes/#comments Sat, 11 Feb 2012 16:01:49 +0000 http://www.everything-microsoft.com/?p=22327 I know that you all love to personalise your Windows 7 Desktops with the latest themes and wallpapers, so today I’ve got a selection of 3 more brilliant themes for you. They include Chickens that Can’t Fly, Butterflies that can fly and some Dynamic Insects.

Chickens Can’t Fly

A rather interesting title for a Windows 7 Theme I think you’ll agree, and that’s what caught my attention in the first place. This theme is from the Xbox Live Game “Chickens Can’t Fly”. So if you’re a fan of that game I’m sure you’ll love this rather comic theme of Chickens as they attempt to fly.

Butterflies Theme

This next theme emphasises the natural beauty of butterflies. It features several close up wallpapers of elusive butterflies in their natural habitat.

Dynamic Insect Theme

And the last theme that I have for you today is another dynamic one. For those of you who don’t know, dynamic themes are constantly updated with new wallpapers via a RSS feed so you’ll never get bored of the same old wallpapers.

This theme features close ups of dragonflies, butterflies, lady bugs and more insects, all in their natural environment.

New Roses Themes for Windows 7http://www.everything-microsoft.com/2012/02/05/roses-themes-windows-7/ http://www.everything-microsoft.com/2012/02/05/roses-themes-windows-7/#comments Sun, 05 Feb 2012 17:05:43 +0000 http://www.everything-microsoft.com/?p=22079 Valentines day is fast approaching, so here are some new Windows 7 themes that you can download an use on your desktop. These are Roses, and they are some of the most wonderful looking pictures ever.

Queen of the Flowers

Known as “the queen of flowers,” roses have been valued for thousands of years for their beauty and fragrance. Their connection to romance also spans the generations, popping up in songs, poems, and in lovers’ bouquets since at least the Middle Ages.

rose is a woody perennial of the genus Rosa, and there are over 100 species. They form a group of erect shrubs, and climbing or trailing plants, with stems that are often armed with sharp prickles. Flowers are large and showy, in colors ranging from white through yellows and reds. Most species are native to Asia, with smaller numbers native to Europe, North America, and northwest Africa. The name rose comes from French, itself from Latin rosa.

Earliest roses are known to have flourished 35 million-years ago  and petrified rose wreaths have been unearthed from ancient Egyptian tombs.

Roses are best known as ornamental plants grown for their flowers in the garden and sometimes indoors. They are also used for commercial perfumes and commercial cut flower crops. Some also work as landscape plants. They also have minor medicinal uses.

Roses often appear in art and appear in various artistic disciplines. They appear in portraits, illustrations, on stamps, as ornaments or as architectural elements. One artist Pierre-Joseph Redouté is known for his detailed watercolors of flowers, particularly roses.

Legends and mythology

In Greek mythology, Aphrodite, Goddess of Love, created the rose from her tears and the blood of her lover Adonis. The Romans, turning Aphrodite into their goddess Venus, also adopted the rose: it became the symbol of love and beauty. Cupid, offering a rose when trying to bribe the God of Silence to hush Venus’s amorous escapades, made the flower into a symbol for secrecy.

Now it’s February, and while it may be the shortest month of the year, even with a leap year this year, I’ve got no less than 27 wallpapers for you this month. That’s nearly a new wallpaper for you every single day!

Of course all these wallpapers come courtesy of Smashing Magazine where they have a bunch of very talented artists who contribute to their collection every month. I think you’ll agree with me that there are some very creative desktop wallpapers in this collection.

I wont go posting all the download links here for the wallpapers as Smashing Magazine have that covered here. They offer you multiple different resolutions as well as an option to get the wallpaper without the calendar. But most importantly they credit all the the authors who contributed so be sure to check it out.

I’ve published a gallery of the images below so you can have a look at them for yourself.

3 Gears of War 3 Themes For Windows 7http://www.everything-microsoft.com/2012/01/31/3-gears-war-3-themes-windows-7/ http://www.everything-microsoft.com/2012/01/31/3-gears-war-3-themes-windows-7/#comments Tue, 31 Jan 2012 16:47:58 +0000 http://www.everything-microsoft.com/?p=22035 Gears of War 3 has been another highly successful game in its series. In fact it seems to be so popular that I’ve managed to find 3 different themes all based on Gears of War 3!

You’ll find all the download links beneath each theme, and if you only want to use the wallpapers from these themes, see my guide on how to do it.

The first theme I’ve found is actually from when it was released back in September of 2011.

Celebrate the launch of the latest installment in the Gears of War series for Xbox 360 with this free Windows 7 theme, featuring glorious images from the savage, fantastical world of the all-new Gears of War 3.

The second theme is a general Gears of War theme based on the portraits of the main characters  Marcus Fenix, Dominic Santiago and Anya Stroud

Prepare your desktop for battle with this free Windows 7 theme containing portraits of Marcus Fenix, Dominic Santiago and Anya Stroud from Gears of War 3, the latest edition to the megahit Xbox series.

[Download not found]

The third and final theme is actually based on Fan Made wallpapers. DeviantArt held a competition for people to come up with some wallpapers for the gaming series and this theme includes a selection of them.

The visionary, apocalyptic world of Gears of War is interpreted by fans in this free theme for Windows 7, which presents winning entries and honorable mentions in the deviantART contest for Gears of War 3.

Latest Ways and Means to Share Files – Part 2 – Windows Live Meshhttp://www.everything-microsoft.com/2012/01/28/latest-ways-means-share-files-part-2/ http://www.everything-microsoft.com/2012/01/28/latest-ways-means-share-files-part-2/#comments Sun, 29 Jan 2012 03:16:25 +0000 http://www.everything-microsoft.com/?p=21926 In my previous article, Ways and Means to Share Files – Part 1, I dealt with installing Windows Live Mesh and left it at that.

Using Windows Live Mesh

Now it’s time to put Windows Live Mesh through its paces sharing some folders/files with other computers in a network.

Starting Off

1.      Open Windows Live Mesh.

2.      The computer you are working on is identified.

3.      Your next task is to include any other computers on your network. To do this, selectGo to Windows Live Devices”. By the way, Sky Drive (Microsoft’s Cloud feature) is active once you log on and ready to go but more of this in my next article.

Go to Windows Live Devices

Note: To access other computers within your home network you must have installed and added Windows Live Mesh from Windows Live Essentials. This requires you to have either a Hotmail or a Live Mail account and to be signed in on the other computer(s) too. When you have done this Live Mesh will open showing your base computer, the one you are working on, and the target computer(s).

Computers for Live Sync

You are now ready to sync a selected file on your base computer which will appear on the target computer.

Syncing folders between Networked Computers

1.      Turn on your second computer. This will be the one you want to share folders with.

2.      Next, activate Windows Live Mesh on both computers.

3.      On your second computer you’ll be asked to log on, use Windows Live or a Hotmail account.

Note: If you haven’t got either you’ll need to create an account.

4.      Now back in the main computer, select Sync a folder.

5.      Windows Live Mesh displays all available locations on your computer.

6.      Double-click My Documents folder and select the sub-folder you want synced.

7.      Next, click the button labelled Sync

8.      The Select Devices window opens.

9.      In the “Where do you want to sync . . . “window check the locations and click the Ok button.

10.   Windows Live Mesh reappears displaying the newly synced folder.

 11.   Now move to your second computer and check to see that Windows Live Mesh has done as you wish.

Note: When syncing a sub-folder within My Documents folder on your second computer, the newly synced folder will be added to My Documents folder.

You have successfully synced a folder on a computer network.

Un-syncing a folder

If you want to stop synchronizing a folder in any of the networked computers or SkyDrive do the following:

1.      Click the folder to be unsynced. This shows its details.

2.      In the expanded view, click Select Devices

3.      The Select Devices window opens. Uncheck SkyDrive and click the Ok button.

4.      Back in the Windows Live Mesh window when you re-select the synced folder, you’ll see SkyDrive is no longer listed in Sync On.

Now you know about Windows Live Mesh and its features sharing files and folders is a breeze. Happy synching!

In my final article, I’ll show you how use the web storage facility, SkyDrive, another location to sync folders. In addition you’ll learn how to personalize the synced computers in a network.

Ways and Means to Share Files – Part 1http://www.everything-microsoft.com/2012/01/27/ways-means-share-files/ http://www.everything-microsoft.com/2012/01/27/ways-means-share-files/#comments Fri, 27 Jan 2012 12:53:34 +0000 http://www.everything-microsoft.com/?p=21896 When you have two or more computers and you want to share important files between them there are several ways you can do this.

Method 1 & 2     Using your Wireless Connection

Providing you have a wireless connection you can use either HomeGroup or Network connections.

Method 3            Purchase a Belkin USB File Transfer Cable

Another way is to buy a Belkin USB Transfer Cables. This allows you to quickly transfer files from one computer to another.

The beauty of this cable setup is you can copy folders/ files from PC to PC without the need to install drivers for the operating systems. It is particularly useful for mobile users wishing to transfer files such as photos, music, videos, documents and many other files from their main computer to their laptop and vice versa. Once you make the connection it is a simple drag-and-drop operation.

Despite the high-speed transfers this equipment provides, it is a pain to have to do this if you have two or more computers as I do. So this takes me to the next option – Windows Live Mesh.

Method 4            Using Windows Live Mesh

This in my opinion is the most efficient way of keeping all your computers up-to-date. When you make changes to files in a Synched folder on the main computer the file is automatically updated in the target computer(s).

A Brief History of Windows Live Mesh

Curious about its origins I checked it out in Wikipedia. This is a brief summary of the developmental history of Windows Live Mesh.

  • November 3, 2005 – Microsoft bought FolderShare from ByteTaxi Inc. on, making it part of their new Windows Live feature.
  • March 10, 2008 – Microsoft released its updated version renaming it Windows Live FolderShare.
  •  April 23, 2008 – Microsoft released the Live Mesh technology preview. The data synchronization system allowed files, folders and other data to be shared and synchronized across PCs and up to 5 GB on the web.

Note: The Live Mesh software was made available for Windows XP, Windows Vista, Windows 7, and other platforms. It included a cloud storage component, called Live Desktop, an online storage service, allowing synchronized folders to be accessible via a website.

  • June 24, 2010 – Microsoft released a beta version Windows Live Sync “Wave 4″.
  • August 17, 2010, – August 29, 2010, after some more updates, the service was officially re-branded, Windows Live Mesh. The cloud-based SkyDrive synced storage was increased to 5 GB.
  • September 30, 2010 – The final version of Windows Live Mesh 2011 (Wave 4) was released on as part of Windows Live Essentials 2011.

Installing Windows Live Mesh

  1. As Windows Live Mesh is part of the Windows Live Essentials package you need to go to this Microsoft website: www.explorelive.com/windows-live-essentails
  2. When the website opens look for the small box labelled “Get Windows Live Essentials and selectDownload now”.
  3. Select Run.
  4. Your UAC will most likely intervene, select Ok.
  5. In the “What do you want to install” window choose which components you want. Check Windows Live Mesh and select Install.
  6. When the installation is complete in the “Done!” box, click Close.
  7. In your All Programs menu you will find Windows Live listed. Select it. pic 7

Note: If you are using Windows 8 Preview Windows, Windows Live Mesh will be featured on the Metro menu.

img class=”alignnone size-full wp-image-21910″ src=”http://www.everything-microsoft.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/01/pic-7ccccc1.png” alt=”” width=”133″ height=”134″ />

Note:  If you are running Windows 7 or earlier you will find it listed within Windows Live Essentials under All Programs.

Tip! Windows 8 Preview

In the Metro menu, right-click on Windows Live Mesh’s button and in the lower section of the Metro screen select Advanced button. When the pop-up menu appears, choose Pin to the Taskbar. In future when you want to use it click this icon on the Taskbar.

Tip! Windows 7

For easy access to Windows Live Mesh, open All Programs menu, select Windows Live Essentials and in the sub-menu right-click on Windows Live Mesh and in the pop-up menu choose, Pin to Taskbar. In future when you want to use it click this icon on the Taskbar.

In my next article I’ll deal with setting up Windows Live Mesh with my other networked computers and saving data on Microsoft’s SkyDrive.

Get The Metro UI On Windows 7 With Metro7http://www.everything-microsoft.com/2012/01/18/metro-ui-windows-7-metro7/ http://www.everything-microsoft.com/2012/01/18/metro-ui-windows-7-metro7/#comments Wed, 18 Jan 2012 21:11:08 +0000 http://www.everything-microsoft.com/?p=21826 There’s been quite a few little programs created over the past couple of months which aim to imitate the new Windows 8 Metro UI on Windows 7 and other Windows operating systems. A lot of them actually do a pretty good job, but I don’t think you will ever get the full Metro UI experience until Microsoft release the first beta for Windows 8 in about a months time.

But if you’re still interested in trying out the new Metro UI and can’t be bothered to go through the hassle of downloading the Windows 8 developer preview, then Metro7 could be just the program you’re looking for.

All you have to do is go and download the app and install it.

[Download not found]

As you can see from my screenshot above, once you start up the app you will be presented with a familiar looking tile based UI that is modelled on Windows 8′s Metro UI. You are able to customise this by dragging and deleting tiles as well as adding new ones as you go. There isn’t really much in the line of built in apps that can be added to the program but it is possible to build up your own collection of tiles and apps with a bit of patience.

It’s pretty cool if you want to play around with the new Metro UI that is coming with Windows 8, the chances are we’ll all need to get used to using it pretty soon. Of course if you are just curious as to how the new Metro UI will work, this is a pretty good place to start and try it out.

Obviously since this isn’t actually the official Microsoft Metro UI, it has been reversed engineered so don’t be surprised if it lags and or crashes on you. It’s really just for playing around with than for practical usage.

Year of the Dragon – New Windows 7 Themeshttp://www.everything-microsoft.com/2012/01/15/year-dragon-windows-7-themes/ http://www.everything-microsoft.com/2012/01/15/year-dragon-windows-7-themes/#comments Sun, 15 Jan 2012 15:18:47 +0000 http://www.everything-microsoft.com/?p=21816 Microsoft has released a new set of Windows 7 Themes called Year of the Dragon.

Celebrate the Year of the Dragon with a free Windows 7 theme featuring magnificent examples—both ancient and new—of the imperial dragon rendered in stone, wood, and bronze.

It’s interesting that most of the world marks the turn of the year around this time. January 23rd brings the start of the Year of the Dragon, for which we’ve assembled a collection of magnificent ancient and modern renderings in stone, wood, and bronze.

The Year of the Dragon

The Dragon is one of the 12-year cycle of animals which appear in the Chinese zodiac related to the Chinese calendar, and the only animal that is legendary. The Year of the Dragon is associated with the earthly branch symbol.

Water and the elemental signs

Water in the Chinese zodiac is the low point of the matter, or the matter’s dying or hiding stage. Water is the fifth stage of Wu Xing. The other stages are Wood, Fire, Earth, and Metal.

Water is the most yin, i.e., polar opposite (yin and yang), in the character of the Five elements. It is associated with the Winter, the North, the planet Mercury, the color black, cold weather, night, and the Black Tortoise (Xuan Wu) in Four Symbols.

The Elemental signs of the Dragon

  • 16 February 1904 – 3 February 1905: Wood Dragon
  • 3 February 1916 – 22 January 1917: Fire Dragon
  • 23 January 1928 – 9 February 1929: Earth Dragon
  • 8 February 1940 – 26 January 1941: Metal Dragon
  • 27 January 1952 – 13 February 1953: Water Dragon
  • 13 February 1964 – 1 February 1965: Wood Dragon
  • 31 January 1976 – 17 February 1977: Fire Dragon
  • 17 February 1988 – 5 February 1989: Earth Dragon
  • 5 February 2000 – 23 January 2001: Metal Dragon
  • 23 January 2012 – 9 February 2013: Water Dragon
  • 10 February 2024 – 28 January 2025: Wood Dragon

The Cycle of Wu Xing

There are two cycles in the Wu Xing, the regenerative and the conquest. In the regenerative cycle, metal engenders Water, as metal traps falling water from a source. The demonstration of Waters power comes as it creates Wood as rain or dew makes plant life flourish.

In the conquest cycle, Water overcomes Fire, since nothing will put out a fire as quickly as water. But Earth overcomes water as earth-built canals direct the flow, as well as soil absorbing water.

January 2012 Smashing Magazine Calendar Wallpapershttp://www.everything-microsoft.com/2012/01/02/january-2012-smashing-magazine-calendar-wallpapers/ http://www.everything-microsoft.com/2012/01/02/january-2012-smashing-magazine-calendar-wallpapers/#comments Mon, 02 Jan 2012 21:33:23 +0000 http://www.everything-microsoft.com/?p=21658 The guys over at Smashing Magazine do a great job putting together some brilliant wallpapers. For the whole of 2011 the ran a series of calendar wallpapers for each month of the year. However the reason I never posted about them before is because I didn’t actually stumble across the series until the end of the summer, by which time I felt it was too late to share the series with you as you would have missed out on the previous months!

So this year I’m going to be bringing you the Calendar Wallpapers from their collection every month, I guess you could say that it’s my new years resolution in a way! Now for the month of January there is 18 different wallpapers for you to choose from. I’d recommend using all of them and set your wallpaper settings to change images every 10 minutes or so in the Windows 7 settings.

Not only are these great looking wallpapers for Windows 7, but they also have a calendar in them as well just for convenience. And if you don’t want to have the calendar on them, you can still download the wallpapers from Smashing Magazine without it.

Of course you can save the images by right click – > save as when your looking at them in the gallery below, but I’d recommend going to Smashing Magazine and getting them there. They have all the different resolutions as well as the non-calendar version. They also credit all the authors who contributed them as well which is important.

Black and White Photography Wallpapers by the Artist Hengki24http://www.everything-microsoft.com/2011/12/31/black-white-photography-art-artist-hendrk24/ http://www.everything-microsoft.com/2011/12/31/black-white-photography-art-artist-hendrk24/#comments Sun, 01 Jan 2012 02:05:13 +0000 http://www.everything-microsoft.com/?p=21655 The photography Artist Hengki24 has a gallery of black and white photographs. Below is a sample of those pictures.

According to Hengki photography is not just a way of expressing his most inner soul but also creating a window to the world where through his pictures the unseen and the unspoken can be grasped. Viewers of his art will see a dominant area of nature. That is no accident. Driven by the desire to explore the mystical beauty of nature, Hengki develops his sense and sensibility by examining the art in new ways through the elements of fine art photography. His freedom of expression is more reflected in the elaboration and exploration of black and white.

His view of photography is that it can never be separated from making the ordinary seem extra-ordinary, or of making the common things look unusual. In this way he welcomes the unexpected by looking at ordinary objects and then indulging and embracing those features in new ways. All of this is possible by taking an ordinary object and making it appear extraordinary and as such as making viewers believe that anything is possible.

Dynamic Nature Themes For Windows 7http://www.everything-microsoft.com/2011/12/29/dynamic-nature-themes-windows-7/ http://www.everything-microsoft.com/2011/12/29/dynamic-nature-themes-windows-7/#comments Thu, 29 Dec 2011 19:51:33 +0000 http://www.everything-microsoft.com/?p=21632 Yesterday I posted about these new dynamic Bing themes for Windows 7. For those of you who don’t know what a dynamic theme is, it’s basically a theme which is constantly getting new wallpapers from an RSS feed. I really like these themes since they’re constantly changing and have stunning wallpapers. They really bring your desktop to life and keep it interesting.

So I decided to go looking for a few more of these dynamic themes to share with you and I found these two. The first one is a Floral Dynamic Theme, and the second one is a Dynamic Theme of different terrains and landscapes.

I think we can all agree that these are gorgeous themes and will look great on your Windows 7 machine. Below is a brief description of each theme as well as their download links

Bing Dynamic Aerial Imagery Theme For Windows 7http://www.everything-microsoft.com/2011/12/28/bing-dynamic-aerial-imagery-theme-windows-7/ http://www.everything-microsoft.com/2011/12/28/bing-dynamic-aerial-imagery-theme-windows-7/#comments Wed, 28 Dec 2011 12:58:09 +0000 http://www.everything-microsoft.com/?p=21607 One of my favourite themes that I use with Windows 7 is the Bing Dynamic theme. For those of you who don’t know, the Dynamic themes are themes that constantly change. Well their wallpapers do at least. New wallpapers are pulled in all the time from an RSS feed so your theme is constantly looking new and fresh. Bing is also well known for having stunning pictures and that’s one of the reasons why this theme is so great.

Now Bing have got a new Dynamic theme, this one is of various aerial shots of the European Landscape from Bing Maps and there’s also one for the United States.

As I mentioned earlier, these themes are constantly updating and changing the wallpapers which are pulled in via RSS feeds.

You can find both the themes below along with their respective Download Links

Bing Aerial Europe

Windows 7 Ice & Globe Themeshttp://www.everything-microsoft.com/2011/12/16/windows-7-ice-globe-themes/ http://www.everything-microsoft.com/2011/12/16/windows-7-ice-globe-themes/#comments Fri, 16 Dec 2011 19:49:11 +0000 http://www.everything-microsoft.com/?p=21506 It’s this time of year when the weather for most of us (in the northern hemisphere that is) is turning increasingly cold and biting day by day, but then again that goes along with the whole Christmas spirit. This turn in the weather has also been the source of inspiration for some of these new themes from Microsoft this week.

The themes are based around the concepts of cold, round, and oddly the number 4?

In the cold category, it’s all about ice, so we’ve got “Ice Water” and “Party Ice”. Of course they both revolve around ice.

Ice Water

The second theme, Party Ice is a bit more colourful. I can’t put it any better than the description that Microsoft provides

Colored lights shining and reflecting through the irregular facets of transparent ice cubes make these photographs look almost like abstract jewels.

The next set of themes then fall into the round category. We’ve got some Bubbles and Marbles for you this time. Bubbles of course being circular spheres of air, and marbles representing circular spheres of, well, marble!

They are all quite simple themes, but all appealing in their own right. I think the first 2 themes are perfect for this time of year, or you could check out the selection of Christmas themes that I put together recently as well.

ASUS & Intel Theme for Windows 7http://www.everything-microsoft.com/2011/11/13/asus-intel-theme-windows-7/ http://www.everything-microsoft.com/2011/11/13/asus-intel-theme-windows-7/#comments Sun, 13 Nov 2011 22:43:49 +0000 http://www.everything-microsoft.com/?p=21159 As part of the recent “In Search of Incredible” campaign that was recently run by Intel and ASUS, they’ve decided to release this theme to celebrate it. The competition itself is now closed but what they were looking for was an incredible story. The prize then offered users who submitted these stories a chance to get it turned into a short film, where they would have their own professional film crew and they’d also get their own ASUS N-Series laptop. The film will then be screened at one of the world’s leading film festivals in Park City, Utah.

While the competition may now be closed for new entries, they want you to help choose the winners so you can head over there and vote for your favourite.

So to celebrate the competition, Intel and ASUS themed up with their creative partner – photographer Don McCullin who provided the images for this theme. The theme is made up of some of his best black and white photographs and includes images of vintage musical equipment, a dusty old record shop, and the backlit grooves of a record spinning on a turntable.

You can have a look at the 7 wallpapers in the gallery below

You can download the theme from the link below, and if you just want the wallpapers, follow this guide.

15 Brilliant Dual Monitor Wallpapers for Windows 7http://www.everything-microsoft.com/2011/11/11/dual-monitor-wallpapers/ http://www.everything-microsoft.com/2011/11/11/dual-monitor-wallpapers/#comments Fri, 11 Nov 2011 15:56:52 +0000 http://www.everything-microsoft.com/?p=21131 I only realised today that we actually have no collection of dual monitor wallpapers up here on Windows7news, so I made it my goal today to go and dig up a top notch selection of dual monitor wallpapers. I’m sure plenty of our readers are running Windows 7 on a dual monitor setup, I often switch between single and dual monitor displays depending on what I’m doing.

One problem with traditional Windows 7 wallpapers is that they are only designed for single monitor displays and when you switch to a dual monitor setup, all it does is tile repeat the image on your second monitor.

But with these dual monitor wallpapers, that have an extra wide resolution, you won’t get that problem. However most users will find that they have to make a slight change before the wallpaper is stretched across the two monitors.

You’ll need to go to Personalize -> Desktop Background, now if you look at Picture Position chances are it says Fill. If you change that to Tile then it should stretch the wallpaper across your two monitors.

So without further ado, here’s a selection of 15 brilliant dual monitor wallpapers for Windows 7.

To Download any of these wallpapers, click on them and you’ll see the full size image on a new page, then right click -> save as / save image as

And of course if you don’t have a dual monitor set up, don’t forget to check out out extensive range of Windows 7 Wallpapers

Great Concept Art Wallpapers from Marmottehttp://www.everything-microsoft.com/2011/10/13/great-concept-art-wallpapers-marmotte/ http://www.everything-microsoft.com/2011/10/13/great-concept-art-wallpapers-marmotte/#comments Thu, 13 Oct 2011 23:38:10 +0000 http://www.everything-microsoft.com/?p=20897 Marmotte is a concepts design artist with a flair for color that highlights ordinary objects and sends them into a special place for observation.

Veronique Meignaud otherwise known as Marmotte (b.1984) is a French freelance illustrator living in Montreal. After two years of formation at the Emile Cohl Art School (Lyon / France), she spent almost five years working for the video game industry as concept artist. Marmotte is now working for several publishers and starting slowly in the fashion Industry.

Approach to Art

Here is her approach to design art:

“While creating a new piece, a lot of trained artists already have a precise idea of what they are after. The picture they want to create is like a set destination, and they work rigorously until this destination is reached. While technique and academic training are necessary in the creation of any piece of artwork, some artists feel they are sometimes trapped by these and feel a need to free themselves. This often manifests with an artist being bored by his own work, feeling that he lacks imagination … Rather than working with a set destination in mind, I like my personal works to take me wherever they want to go. Thus the destination is never set, it evolves during the making of the picture. This is the way I feel the most free, and this is the way that I feel my ideas won’t curb themselves to a limited space.”

Her style has come to the attention of multiple clients that picture her work for its dramatic colors. The clients include Computer Games Studios, Electronic Arts, Darkworks, Don’t Nod Entertainment, Spiders Games, Tokkun Studio, Hydravision, Gameloft, Widescreen Games, Etranges Libellules, Wizarbox, Nemopolis, Fashion Design, Nike, and Marc Ecko.

The publishers she has worked with include Wizards of the Coast, Ankama Editions, Imagine FX magazine, Advance Photoshop magazine, Milan Jeunesse, ActuSF Editions.

Video Tutorial

She has worked on a tutorial video for Massive Black, “Stream of Consciousness Illustration” is now available on Massive Black Download.

Beside this, her personal art projects are on-going, such as Kerogen, an illustration book that will be published by the fresh Venusdea label, which is directed by Barbara Canepa & Clotilde Vu in the Soleil Editions.

iSteve Theme For Windows 7http://www.everything-microsoft.com/2011/10/10/isteve-theme-windows-7/ http://www.everything-microsoft.com/2011/10/10/isteve-theme-windows-7/#comments Mon, 10 Oct 2011 19:28:37 +0000 http://www.everything-microsoft.com/?p=20837 I’m sure everyone in the world knows by now that Steve Jobs sadly passed away last week. The CEO and Co-Founder of Apple was a truly inspirational individual who had an unnatural ability to make people want products that they probably didn’t really need. Steve changed the way we all use technology and he will be greatly missed by not only us in the tech world, but everyone.

So in memory of the great man, I’ve got this Steve Jobs theme for Windows 7. The iSteve Theme is fairly simple, just a few black and white images of Steve Jobs with some of his most inspirational quotes

The Why and Wherefore of Anti-virus Programshttp://www.everything-microsoft.com/2011/10/09/wherefore-antivirus-programs/ http://www.everything-microsoft.com/2011/10/09/wherefore-antivirus-programs/#comments Sun, 09 Oct 2011 06:13:49 +0000 http://www.everything-microsoft.com/?p=20799 We all know how important it is to have an anti-virus program on our computer to catch viruses, malware, prevent identification theft and so on. Unauthorised access to your computer via the Internet is commonplace, just read the headlines about hackers accessing and corrupting files in government and military computer systems. Private individuals are also fair game!

It is unfortunate that some users still live in a fool’s paradise and fail to install an AV program and jeopardise their computer’s security. Often their answer is to say they never log onto the Internet and never let anybody access their computer. If this is true they’ll probably get away with it. Others say they’ve got an anti-virus program but when you ask if they update it regularly they’re not sure.

Besides having your computer compromised and the files corrupted, the worst thing that can happen is to have your personal information stolen. If you fail to take basic precautions by installing a reliable anti-virus software application you are indeed taking a serious risk.

Installing a reliable Anti-virus application is perhaps the most single and cost-effective action you can take for your computer’s health and safety. It is essential to have a reliable AV program and to update it regularly.

Initially, when I started using computers and knowing full well the dangers that lurked on the Internet, I purchased Norton anti-virus program. At first I was happy with its ability to detect and remove the “nasties”. As each subsequent version came out Norton became more and more complicated. It became too intrusive in my opinion. Removing it from your computer was a work of art indeed. Others may well disagree with my negative attitude towards Norton.

When you buy a new computer you will find a 30 day trial of Norton ready for you to install it. My advice is don’t! I’ve purchased several computers over the years and remembering my earlier experience with Norton never took up their offer. Some of my friends who have done so and later decided against using Norton, had the devil’s own job removing it from the computer.

If cost is a factor well there are several free AV programs available. Here is a list of good reliable ones.

  • Avast! Free Antivirus
  • Avira AntiVir Personal Edition
  • AVG Anti-Virus Free Edition
  • Microsoft Security Essentials
  • Panda Cloud Antivirus

All of the above, with the exception of Microsoft Security Essentials, all of those listed come with an advanced version that you have to purchase.  The free versions, excluding Microsoft Security Essentials, are a cut-down version, just providing minimal support. For enhanced security you may need to purchase the full version. All these free AV applications encourage good computer security at no cost to users. So why spend good money on an expensive anti-virus program when there are a number of free versions available all of which are just as effective.

These days I use Microsoft’s free program, Microsoft Security Essentials. This runs nicely with Windows 7 and suits my needs completely with its regular automatic updates and its ability to scan my computer for viruses etc.

It is available from Microsoft’s website at the following location –

Once you install Microsoft Security Essentials, its icon is added to the Notification Area. Its easy to-use interface allows you to scan you computer for virus etc. Normally its icon is hidden on the Notifications Area but you can check it out by clicking the up arrow button.

Tip! Should you wish to see Microsoft Security Essentials on the taskbar, access the Notifications Area window by clicking the up arrow button. Scroll down  to find Microsoft Security Essentials and select “Show icons and notifications”.

Microsoft Security Essentials

If you are in the market for a reliable cost-free AV program, give Microsoft Security Essentials serious consideration!

Internet Radio on Your Computer – Part 2http://www.everything-microsoft.com/2011/10/08/internet-radio-computer-part-2/ http://www.everything-microsoft.com/2011/10/08/internet-radio-computer-part-2/#comments Sat, 08 Oct 2011 05:59:39 +0000 http://www.everything-microsoft.com/?p=20786 Listening to Internet Radio Stations using Windows Media Player

In my previous article on listening to the Internet Radio on your computer, I extolled the virtues of MediaU Player Mercury.  It may seem curious to some that in my earlier search for a good radio player for listening to Internet Radio stations I, not only overlooked one of the features of the Windows Media Player, but also didn’t know it included an effective player too. This makes me wonder how many other users of Windows 7 know about and use Windows Media Player to listen to live audio streams from Internet Radio Stations?

With Windows Media Player you can:

  • Browse stations by genre
  • Search for specific stations

Well, here’s a quick guide about how to use it!

1.      Open Windows Media Player.

2.      Click the Media Guide button in the lower left corner of the Player Library.

Opening Media Guide

3.      Next, click Internet Radio at the top of the Windows Media Guide webpage.

Opening Media Player

4.      Now you have two choices. You can – Browse for a station by Genre or Search for Radio Stations.

Option 1       Browsing by Genre

There are 36 genres available.

1.      Select the Genre, for example select “Classical”.

2.      Next, a list of classical stations appears.

3.      Choose a station and click Listen.

Choosing a Genre

Option 2              Search for Radio Station

You can use Search to filter your search results by clicking drop-down menus in the Search box, and then select values for genre, language, and country or region.

1.      Click the button labeled “Search for radio stations”.

Searching for Radio Stations

2.      Next, the Search Box opens. There are three choices available. Choose the Genre, Language and Country/Region.

Search Options

3.      Depending on your choice you’ll get as result but this is not always the case. (See: Bad Result below)

Searches Results

Bad Result

I have found using more than selecting more than two options often results in a “no win” situation. In the next screen picture I chose these search optionsEnglish (United States), Jazz and Australia with no result. The result seems to imply we don’t speak English here! However, I’m sure this was only a minor glitch!

Inconclusive Search Result

Good Result

The criteria I used for this search was – English (United States), Jazz and United States. No complaints about that!

Successful Search

Listening to Your Chosen Station

Once you have made a successful search select the Station and click Listen.

Listening to selected Station

Now enjoy!

Stored Stations

One final point to keep in mind! As you seek and find stations you like, Windows Media Player keeps tabs on where you’ve been. This information is stored on the right-hand side of Windows Media Player’s window.

Stations previously visited

I’m sure most users will appreciate having a useful Internet Radio Player, as found in Windows Media Player, within their grasp and thus not have to search the web for a suitable player.

Hindsight View!

While I find it handy to have Window Media Player’s Internet Radio Play so convenient, I consider mediaU Player Mercury the better proposition for several reasons. Firstly, it has a wider selection of Radio Stations such  Swiss Opera and Radio Swiss Classic. These are two of my favourite stations free of the advertisements that pester you on American Internet Radio stations.  You can also access available non-internet stations such as FM Radio stations here in Australia. Secondly, I like the way you can pre-program it to listen to your favourite stations. As usual, everything comes down to personal preferences!

So what do you think!

Windows 8 UX Pack for Windows 7http://www.everything-microsoft.com/2011/10/02/windows-8-ux-pack/ http://www.everything-microsoft.com/2011/10/02/windows-8-ux-pack/#comments Sun, 02 Oct 2011 15:44:14 +0000 http://www.everything-microsoft.com/?p=20625 Some of you may love the new Metro UI for Windows 8, others may hate it, but either way I bet you all want to try it out at some stage. Of course the only way to experience it properly is to grab yourself a copy of the Windows 8 Developer Preview and then install it. I’ve put together a nice little guide to install Windows 8 in a virtual box on your existing Windows 7 machine which you can find here. However the issue with installing Windows 8 in a virtual machine is that unless you’ve got a fairly high spec system, it’s not going to perform very well.

So for those of you who want to try out the new Windows 8 UI, but don’t fancy installing the developer preview, here is another option for you. This free Windows 8 UX Pack will bring the Windows 8 UI experience to your desktop without any modifications to your registry or system files.

It’s quite simple to use. All you have to do is download the UX pack from the link at the end of this post. Then you extract the folder.

Next you want to run the executable file that’s contained in the extracted folder. You will then be presented with various different options which allow you to select what theme it is you want to use. You’ve a choice between Windows 8 Aero, Aero Lite or the full blown Metro UI theme.

There’s also a couple of other options like selecting the wallpaper and log on screen as well as changing the start menu ‘s icon.

It’s all quite self-explanatory and to undo any changes you simply just run the .exe file again and hit uninstall.

It does actually work quite well, however low powered machines will probably find things aren’t quite as fluid and smooth as they should be. But it’s definitely a good alternative to downloading the Windows 8 developer preview if you only want to get a feel for the UI

Creative Retouching

Creative retouching is used as an art form or for commercial use to create more sleek and interesting creative images, some for advertisements,  other just to garner attention. Creative retouching can involve manipulation for fashion, beauty or advertising photography such as pack-shots. One of the most prominent disciplines in creative retouching is image-composting. Here, the digital artist uses multiple photos to create a single composite image. Now a days, 3D elements are used more and more to add extra elements or even locations and backgrounds. This kind of image composition is used when conventional photography would be technically too difficult or impossible to shoot on location or in studio.
