Anyone know if there are any planned changes to allow ‘naming’ an image backup using 7 ? When I backup my laptop and desktop to an external HDD, it overwrites the previous since the backup is the same name and no provisions that I can find to name it.

I don’t believe that’s possible, but it seems odd that the backups overwrite each other. Do you have both computers named the same thing?

The only thing I can suggest is that (if you get to pick a location), make two separate folders and keep a backup for each system in separate directories.

It makes a folder called WindowsImageBackup regardless of the pc name and overwrites from one to the other. Does not give the option of placing in different folders. Then on restore, it looks for that directory.
Looks like I’m going to have to go to Paragon or something.

Windows Backup is the primary thing that I feel needs updated for Windows 7 SP1 or Windows 8 – here’s hoping they come though. However, if you’re planning on using third-party backup solutions, might I suggest Acronis Trueimage Home? The 2010 version is fantastic, and well worth the small cost to purchase. It’s what keeps all my computers running smoothly, even after I decide to install linux (Which always ends in disaster).

A good work around is to use Todo Backup, an open source imaging program. I use it and love it. It’s very easy and you can name your backup anything you like. Check it out at http://www.todo-backup.com/url:2vzvfqrv

Microsoft generally only accept product suggestions from people actually tasked with beta testing the software through their connect site. You could try to add your comment to the Social forums at http://social.technet.microsoft.com/smfs/en-GB/w7itprogeneral/threads/url:2bsszhc3 and maybe someone will be able to give you info on whether something like this is being implemented.
